Ever since I started menstruating as a teen, I’ve always had irregular periods. I’ve visited the doctor about the issue, on various occasions, but everything else seemed fine. I was told there was no cause for concern.
This didn’t prevent me from worrying though, as I’ve got older I’ve gone up to 3 months with no period. I couldn’t help thinking something was wrong.
When my period did turn up, it was always light and only lasted a couple of days.
I actually didn’t mind this at all! Not only was I saving money on female products, I didn’t have to worry about heavy bleeding like a lot of women do.
Pre-Menstrual Tension (PMT)
The thing which did bother me though was my mood. I found that for at least 1 week out of every month I’d have such a low mood. I wondered if I was chronically depressed. It would come on suddenly, last around a week and then disappear. I’d then be back to my positive, happy self. My mood was terrible during those dark weeks, I felt sorry for my kids because I knew I was unpleasant to be around.
I had breast pain and bloating too, all the signs that I was ovulating but then my period just wouldn’t come. I really didn’t want to go back to the doctor again, because I knew he’d just try put me on the Pill. I had to find a remedy for my menstrual problems.
If you’re someone who suffers with irregular periods, heavy periods or other menstrual problems then read on, the remedy below could help you!
I started researching and found out that I was likely suffering from low levels of Progesterone.
Progesterone is the hormone which regulates the menstrual cycle. It peaks around 1 week before menstruating and gives a sense of comfort and calm.
According to Cycle Harmony, the main signs of Progesterone Deficiency are:
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Estrogen dominance (causing PMS, Fibroids, Endometriosis etc)
- Insomnia, irritability, anxiety and mood swings
- Infertility or miscarriages
How I cured my mood swings and irregular periods with Agnus Castus Fruit
The Agnus Castus plant, also known as ‘Chaste Tree’ or ‘Chasteberry Fruit’ is a shrub native to the Meditteranean and Central Asia. It has dark-purple berries the size of peppercorns. The fruit has been used for centuries as a herbal medicine to help with female hormonal imbalance.
It is said to work by naturally increasing more progesterone hormone production in the body.
The herb can be taken as a tincture, tea or capsule. I decided to try the following herbal capsules because it was rated highly on Amazon;
I purchased 3 bottles of the above, each with 60 capsules in. Each capsule contains 400mg of Agnus Castus fruit and nothing else. According to the Amazon reviews, the herb starts to work best after around 3 months. At a recommended 2 capsules a day, I needed 3 bottles to last 3 months.
The capsules are vegetarian and vegan-friendly and easy to swallow. They contain a brown powder (Vitex agnus-castus L.) which doesn’t have much smell or taste thankfully (I’ve tried herbal supplements in the past that stink!)
I found the reviews on Amazon to be correct. I didn’t notice any change to my periods or PMT until at least after the second bottle. Here’s what happened:
- My periods came back, on a regular basis (every 4 weeks)
- I had NO mood swings or depression leading up to my periods (this was the best and most amazing part for me!)
- No more breast pain
Side effects and precautions
According to WebMD, Agnus Castus is considered safe for use but not recommended for people who are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- On medication for Parkinsons disease
- On medication for Schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders
The Agnus Castus herbal supplement definitely worked for me BUT I learned that you must continue taking it. After my 2nd bottle I was very busy moving house and my 3rd unopened bottle got put to the back of the cupboard. I forgot all about it UNTIL a couple months later when the familiar low mood and depression started to come back.
I’ve now started taking the supplement again and I will be ordering more to maintain my regular menstrual cycle.
